Brandick is a warder at the Old Mine, where his work includes keeping watch over the diggers and the people assigned to them. He does not present himself as a negotiator or a friend; his first instinct is to judge whether someone is making trouble.

Watching Aleph

When the Hero tells Brandick that Aleph does nothing unless someone is watching him, Brandick briefly sounds interested. The moment he realizes the Hero is trying to make him a snitch, his attitude changes. He dismisses the accusation and sends the Hero away, making clear that camp discipline does not mean every guard welcomes outside interference.

A guard's boundary

Brandick's assignment is simple: watch Aleph and report trouble at the Old Mine. He treats the order as a duty, not an invitation to investigate every complaint, and rejects the Hero's attempt to turn him against the digger.
