Why he stays hidden

Gilbert lives alone in a hideout above the valley, surprised that the Hero has found him and pleased enough to call it good work. He has chosen a place where visitors are rare and the Old Camp's authority feels distant.

Leaving Gomez behind

Gilbert says he could no longer stand Gomez and his bootlickers, and that he also ran into trouble with them. He does not describe the incident in detail or present himself as a revolutionary; he simply left and has stayed away long enough to believe that the people in the valley have probably forgotten him.

A quiet refuge

Isolation suits Gilbert because, in his view, there are too many idiots in the valley. His hideout is therefore less a temporary hiding place than a deliberate alternative to camp life.

The record establishes why he left and why he remains, without supplying a larger faction or quest history that would justify adding one.
