Baal Cadar

Guru · Swamp Camp

"Well, not everybody can theory into practice right away. You seem to have a natural affinity for magic."

Teaching the novices

Baal Cadar teaches the Brotherhood's novices and has little patience for a newcomer who approaches him without a useful reason. Flattery and requests to become a novice earn an annoyed scoff or a tired sigh rather than an invitation into the inner circle.

A natural affinity

Baal Cadar pays closer attention after catching the Hero using the Sleeper's magic during meditation. He demands to know who taught the Hero, expecting that a spell used so effectively must have come from an instructor.

The Hero's answer—that he learned from a scroll and had no teacher—impresses him despite himself.

Theory into practice

Baal Cadar observes that not everyone can turn theory into practice immediately and tells the Hero that he seems to have a natural affinity for magic. The compliment is restrained, but it marks a change from his earlier irritation: ability, rather than politeness or flattery, is what makes the teacher take notice.

Quest involvement

  • Admission to the Swamp Camp: For Baal Cadar, use a Sleeper magic scroll near his students. I gotta get Baal Cadar's support.

What other NPCs say

Lester points out Baal Cadar when explaining which guru teaches the novices, while Joru says he sells Brotherhood goods but does not talk to outsiders. Caine's remarks connect him to the Sleeper and to the other gurus' visions, so his role combines instruction, restricted access, and spiritual authority.

Magic-circle training

  • The progression rule: Baal Cadar trains only members of the Swamp Camp. Each circle after the first requires the previous circle to be learned, the requested circle to be missing, and enough skill points; the training topics also check that the Hero has not already learned that circle.
