Lester
Novice · Swamp Camp
"Good thing you didn't just talk to Baal Namib. You probably don't know this, but outsiders aren't allowed to talk to the gurus."
The newcomer’s guide
Lester introduces himself as the one who looks after newcomers, and immediately warns the Hero about camp etiquette: outsiders and novices may only speak to a guru if the guru speaks to them first, a rule he underscores sharply when the Hero forgets it, snapping that he shouldn't have addressed a guru like that.
The Brotherhood's structure
He lays out the Brotherhood's structure in plain terms: the gurus are the minds of the Brotherhood, powerful in every sense; the templars are the muscle, hard trained warriors, some gifted with the Sleeper's magic; and novices like himself are the hands that keep the community running, some content to stay, others working toward becoming templars or gurus. He explains the Sleeper as the divine being they worship, who sent their master Y'Berion a vision promising freedom in exchange for help returning to the world.
Lester is candid about his own doubts, admitting two years in this hellhole of a Colony open your mind to certain possibilities,
but insists the visions and magic are real, whatever the other camps think. He also explains the swampweed they smoke, grown locally to open their minds to the Sleeper, even if most outsiders only value it for taking the edge off, and notes it's traded to other camps to spread word of the Brotherhood.
Earning the gurus' notice
On how to actually get noticed, Lester explains the gurus are watching closely what people do around the camp, especially newcomers, and that proving usefulness to the community is what eventually earns their attention. He tells the Hero that joining requires convincing Cor Kalom, Y'Berion's right hand who decides who gets in and who doesn't, and that Kalom relies on guru recommendations, like Lester's own master, Baal Namib.
Baal Namib's conversion story
To win Baal Namib's favor specifically, Lester coaches the Hero through a staged show of faith: since Baal Namib worries that newcomers still pray to Innos or Adanos, the Hero is to claim he had a glorious vision that made him renounce the Old Gods, with Lester prompting the performance and telling him to make a show of it, and don't hold back,
since the man loves a good conversion story.
Lester also offers to personally guide the Hero around the camp once his day's work is done.
Later conversations
The recovered material also keeps Lester in the story long after the first Swamp Camp tour. His later conversations ask about the orc enclave and the Sleeper temple, point the Hero toward Milten, and connect him again with Diego, Gorn, and the group's later meeting points.
Those are later story beats, not replacements for his early role as the Brotherhood's approachable guide; their availability remains tied to story conditions.
What other NPCs say
Lester appears in conversations about the Brotherhood's novices, the focus-stone expedition, and the people already helping the Hero. Diego, Gorn, and Milten connect him to the wider plan, while Joru and Cor Angar show that he is trusted to explain camp matters that outsiders would otherwise struggle to understand.
