A place to stay

Guy greets the Hero on arrival in the Colony and offers a place to stay while he decides which camp to join. The free hut is beside the arena, marked by a red awning.

His welcome is modest, but it gives a newcomer one of the first practical advantages available in the Old Camp: somewhere to sleep before choosing a side.

The Old Camp's bargain

Guy says life in the Old Camp is decent as long as people pay the warders' protection money. Anyone who starts a fight with someone who has paid gets stomped, while two paying men can fight as long as nobody dies and the warders just sit back and watch.

The arrangement is order with a price attached.

The Old Camp also controls outside goods: bread, cheese, ham, beer, and wine sell well because the New Camp's rice swill is cheap and unappealing. Weapons always find a buyer, while proper armor is scarce and expensive.

Guy says the warders' equipment was looted from dead prison guards after the revolt and worn as a kind of banner.

Rival camps

Guy is less complimentary about the New Camp, warning that a person might get his throat slit over a breadcrumb. Without Gomez's warders, he says only the Water Mages and their mercenaries have the strength to run things, and they care about little except their escape plan.

He knows little firsthand about the Swamp Camp because he has never gone there. He has heard that the Loons are generous and are recruiting like there is no tomorrow, so he directs curious visitors to the novices who pass through the Old Camp.

Guy's comparison is useful precisely because it is local opinion, not a claim to have seen every camp himself.

What other NPCs say

Fletcher recommends Guy when the Hero wants to find someone who knows the Old Camp's people. The advice is useful precisely because Guy is a digger rather than a senior official: his daily work puts him in contact with many corners of the camp and its rumors.
