A warder's reputation
Herek is an Old Camp warder who makes hostility part of his introduction. He tells the Hero to get lost because he does not like his face, then boasts that he entered the Colony after killing twelve men in a single night.
A fighter's reputation
When the Hero challenges him, Herek accepts immediately and asks whether he should mess him up. The boast and the readiness to fight are meant to make his history do the work before the first blow lands; he wants the Hero to understand that violence is not an exception for him.
Bloodwyn's protection
Herek also confronts the Hero for refusing to pay Bloodwyn's protection money. He says the warders now have to cover the missing share themselves and promises that the Hero will remember it the next time Bloodwyn comes asking.
His threat shows how the protection scheme is enforced below Bloodwyn's own level: other warders are expected to defend the payment as their own.

Jesse points Herek out after describing the people he has seen moving around the camp. The context is a discussion of Bloodwyn's rough circle and the danger faced by weaker diggers, so Herek's reputation comes from being associated with that threatening part of the outer ring.
