Protection for ore

Bloodwyn approaches the Hero on arrival, warning that there's some real bastards in this camp who think they can treat freshies like meatbugs. He offers protection in exchange for ore, framing it as a gentlemen's agreement in which each side watches the other's back.

The price is ten nuggets; if the Hero has less, Bloodwyn takes whatever is available and lets him settle up later.

Handing over the ore earns praise and a promise to watch the Hero's back, accompanied by a warning not to get any funny ideas. Bloodwyn calls the arrangement voluntary, but the threat underneath it is plain: the warders know exactly how dangerous the camp can be for someone who refuses.

Jesse's debt

When the Hero offers to pay Jesse's debt, Bloodwyn insists that the Hero settle his own dues first. He dismisses Jesse as a weakling who will not last much longer, although he still accepts the ore if the Hero insists on covering it.

Protection is therefore also a hierarchy: Bloodwyn decides whose problem deserves attention and whose weakness can be used against him.

The end of the friendship

Bloodwyn returns periodically for the same ten nuggets. If the Hero refuses to keep paying, Bloodwyn drops the friendly act and calls it the end of their friendship, warning that no help should be expected when those mean bastards come to knock him out and rob him.

If the Hero says he can take care of himself, Bloodwyn agrees dryly—Of course you can—leaving the threat to speak for itself.

What other NPCs say

Dusty invokes Bloodwyn while comparing the danger of joining the Brotherhood with the danger of remaining under the warders' fists. Jesse is dismissed by him as weak, while Grim and Herek connect him with intimidation and messages, so Bloodwyn's authority is built on fear rather than respect. Jesse explains the threat in practical terms: Bloodwyn has paid several people to give the Hero a hard time, so his influence extends beyond the warder standing in the outer ring.
