New Souls for the Brotherhood

Quest · Chapter 1 · Swamp Camp

Start with: Baal Tondral, Dusty.

Route

  • Baal Tondral says the Brotherhood needs new souls and points you toward the Old Camp. Dusty is interested in leaving, but he is afraid of the warders and is unsure whether the Swamp Camp will accept him.
  • Offer Dusty the 100 nuggets he needs to get past the guards. Then return after speaking with Melvin in the Swamp Camp; Melvin confirms that Dusty was once meant to travel with him.
  • Take Dusty through the south gate and do the talking yourself. The northern guards do not accept bribes, so the route matters.
  • Bring Dusty to Baal Tondral. Tondral accepts the recruit as a possible future novice and promises to recommend you to Cor Kalom for proving your willingness to strengthen the Brotherhood.

Outcome

Dusty reaches the Swamp Camp, while your help recruiting a new soul earns Baal Tondral's recommendation.

Quest Parts

  • New Souls for the Brotherhood:
  • Find an interested novice:

  • I could try and convince Dusty.:
  • I should make sure Dusty gets to the Swamp Camp.: Baal Tondral identifies Dusty as the person you need to track down.

A recruit caught between fear and faith

Baal Tondral says the Brotherhood needs new souls because its greatest ritual will depend on the strength of many minds. The Great Awakening is meant to open the camp to the Sleeper's message, and Tondral believes every willing participant makes it more powerful. Recruitment is therefore both a spiritual duty and a practical need for the ceremony being prepared.

He points the hero toward the Old Camp, where men have grown tired of the ore barons' fear and lies. Dusty is one of those possible converts, but his desire to leave is tangled with caution. He knows the warders watch the gates, and he is not sure whether the Swamp Camp is truly better than the life he already knows.

A friend, a bribe, and a dangerous road

Melvin confirms that Dusty was once supposed to travel with him, but Melvin left first and devoted himself to the Sleeper. Dusty's hesitation is not simple disbelief; he wants proof that the destination is real and that he will not be abandoned there. The hero becomes the person who can close that gap.

The price of passage is one hundred nuggets, enough to persuade the guards to look away. The route matters too: the south gate accepts the arrangement, while the northern guards do not. Dusty cannot safely negotiate for himself, so the hero must guide him through the camp's layers of suspicion.

A soul saved, or a soul recruited?

Baal Tondral is unimpressed by Dusty's uncertain zeal, but accepts that he has taken a dangerous step. He may become a novice in time, while the hero receives a recommendation for making the journey possible. The moment is deliberately ambiguous: the Brotherhood calls it salvation, while Dusty still sees it as an escape from Bloodwyn and the warders.

That tension gives the recruitment its larger meaning. The Brotherhood offers refuge to people who feel trapped, but it also needs their minds for a ritual whose consequences no one yet understands. By bringing Dusty inside, the hero helps an individual find another future and strengthens the movement gathering around the Sleeper at the same time.
