A miner considering escape

Dusty is worn down by two weeks of hard labour for a handful of lousy nuggets, most of which goes to food. He has been listening to Parvez, a Swamp Camp recruiter, describe how much better life is there, and is weighing whether to leave.

When the Hero offers to help, Dusty agrees but says they need at least a hundred nuggets to bribe the guards. The south gate is the only realistic route because the north-gate guards will not take bribes.

Melvin's absence

Dusty has not left on his own because his friend Melvin went to the Swamp Camp the week before and has not been heard from. Until he knows what happened to Melvin, the better life Parvez describes remains a promise rather than something Dusty can trust.

A price for looking away

The warders eventually realise that Dusty has been talking about leaving. He admits, with a shrug, guess I talked too much, and says it will now take another hundred nuggets to make them look the other way.

When the Hero offers to cover the bribe, Dusty is caught off guard; he cannot understand why a stranger would help him reach the swamp. His hesitation is not a lack of desire, but the caution of someone who has learned that every escape has a price.

Quest involvement

  • New Souls for the Brotherhood: Start with: Baal Tondral, Dusty. I could try and convince Dusty. I should make sure Dusty gets to the Swamp Camp.

What other NPCs say

Baal Tondral discusses Dusty while deciding whether his doubts about the Brotherhood disqualify him from salvation or future novitiate. Melvin brings him up when explaining who intended to leave with him, so Dusty's story sits between religious pressure and the practical fear of getting past the camp's guards.
