From digger to convert

Melvin was once a digger in the Old Camp, but he ran away from Gomez's men and joined the Brotherhood. He now speaks as a newly convinced follower of the Sleeper, wearing his devotion openly and treating the Swamp Camp as a place that has finally given meaning to work that used to leave his hands bloody for a bowl of stew and rancid beer.

The convert

Melvin says the change in his clothes and hair makes his origins obvious, but his real transformation is religious. Baal Tondral has noticed his devotion and intends to tell Cor Kalom that Melvin is worthy of the novitiate.

Melvin presents this as proof that the Sleeper has chosen him, even while admitting that the Hero has not received the same sign.

Dusty and the Old Camp

Baal Tondral sends Melvin to find a recruit, and Melvin names Dusty. He believes Dusty only got cold feet because the Sleeper has not spoken to him, then asks the Hero to tell Dusty to get over himself.

The request shows how quickly Melvin has replaced his old camp loyalty with Brotherhood certainty: the Old Camp is no longer home to him, but an example of everything he thinks the Sleeper will soon judge.

In the Sleeper's temple

Later, Melvin's faith hardens into fanaticism. He insists that he has heard the Sleeper whisper in his dreams, believes the orcs serve the same master, and dismisses warnings that the Sleeper will kill everyone in the Colony and Myrtana because the Hero was not chosen.

When Kalom's ritual is close to beginning, Melvin stays behind to deliver the message and then prepares to attack, treating the approaching disaster as the fulfilment of his conversion rather than a danger.

What other NPCs say

Dusty brings up Melvin while explaining that a friend intended to leave with him but lost his nerve or disappeared. The context gives Melvin a place in the movement of people between camps, where changing allegiance and fear of the unknown can separate companions.
