The Cult's Recipe

Quest · Chapter 1 · Old Camp

Route

  • Dexter wants Cor Kalom's dreamjuice formula for the Old Camp. Kalom will not discuss it with outsiders, so enter the Swamp Camp as someone trying to join the Brotherhood.
  • Ask Caine where Kalom keeps his recipes: he points you to Kalom's chest. The formula lists Seraphis, swampweed, and minecrawler ichor.
  • Bring the recipe to Dexter rather than trying to buy it from Kalom; Kalom treats any direct offer as an insult.

Outcome

Dexter pays for the recipe and puts in a good word with Diego.

A sacred drink seen from two sides

Dexter calls dreamjuice a potent brew made from minecrawler ichor and swampweed, a substance the Brotherhood uses to open the mind to the Sleeper. To the Old Camp, the formula is valuable intelligence and possibly a useful product. To Cor Kalom, it is a sacred elixir, not a commodity to be sold to strangers.

The disagreement is the reason Dexter cannot obtain it himself. Kalom will not discuss the recipe with an outsider, so Dexter asks the hero to enter the Swamp Camp as a prospective believer. The mission is an act of disguise from the beginning: the hero must borrow the Brotherhood's language in order to reach the information the Old Camp wants.

A novice's accidental key

Caine points the hero toward Kalom's chest, revealing that the formula is kept close to the alchemist rather than shared openly. The ingredients—Seraphis, swampweed, and minecrawler ichor—make the mixture a product of both the swamp's harvest and the mine's dangers. The recipe is a small document carrying the labor of two different parts of the colony.

Returning it to Dexter changes its meaning again. He pays for a secret that the Brotherhood treats as holy, and promises to tell Diego that the hero succeeded. The reward is not only ore; it is a stronger reputation among people who value the ability to cross a faction's boundary and come back with what was hidden there.

The cost of using belief as a disguise

The hero's success depends on treating the Brotherhood's faith seriously enough to pass through its doors, while knowing that the same faith is being exploited for someone else's advantage. That tension will follow the recipe beyond the hand-in. A drink intended to open minds is also becoming another instrument in the camps' struggle for information, influence, and control.
