Dexter

Shadow · Old Camp

"Kalom checks all the novices sooner or later."

A recommendation from Diego

Dexter is a fence and Old Camp figure whose backing carries weight with Diego. He offers the Hero a way to earn it: retrieve a potent brew recipe from Cor Kalom, a Swamp Camp alchemist and one of the Brotherhood's top figures.

Kalom will not talk to outsiders, so Dexter's plan is for the Hero to pose as someone trying to join; Kalom checks the novices sooner or later, and the recipe may be reachable once he is talking.

Dexter is clear that his recommendation depends entirely on how the job goes. He haggles over expenses, first refusing an advance of fifty nuggets, then grudgingly paying rather than lose the Hero's help.

The stolen recipe

When the Hero delivers the recipe, Dexter reads its contents—seraphis, swampweed, and crawler ichor—and is unimpressed by the secret itself. He thinks the Fire Mages will know what to do with it, probably get hammered on it, 'cause that's all they're doing these days.

He pays the Hero and promises to report the result to Diego.

A fence's directions

Dexter also sells goods and maps and can point the Hero toward the Swamp Camp. He identifies the south gate by the fallen tower, turning a dealer's ordinary stock into practical information.

His business is built on knowing who can be trusted with what, and on charging for the information when the favour is not already part of a bargain.

What other NPCs say

Diego mentions Dexter while reviewing the Hero's jobs: he dislikes Dexter using the Hero for private dealings, but admits that Dexter was delighted when the stolen recipe was recovered. Gravo and Grim place him among the Old Camp's more opportunistic operators rather than its trusted officials.
