Grim
Digger · Old Camp
"It's the only way they'll ever take me in."
A freshie learning the rules
Grim has only just arrived with the previous week's haul, but he already understands that a newcomer who does not want to dig should aim for the Shadows. The first step is finding someone to vouch for you and show you the ropes; Grim recommends Diego because he followed the same route and found him decent.
He explains the process as a chain of tests: earn points with the other Shadows, complete a personal test from your mentor, and only then receive an audience with Gomez. Grim says he has already convinced Dexter, Sly, and Fingers, the kind of people whose approval can make the next step possible.
The stolen amulet
Grim has spotted a man outside camp bragging that he stole an amulet from the latest ore-baron convoy. He asks the Hero to help take the man and his partner down because he cannot do it alone.
In return, Grim will return the amulet and tell Gomez that the Hero helped, or split the reward if the Hero prefers. Once the Hero agrees, Grim is ready to move: Music to my ears.
Survival by obedience
When challenged over his loyalty to the warders, Grim is blunt. He does whatever they tell him because it is the only way they will accept him, and calls never crossing a warder the first and most important lesson everyone learns in here.
The strategy is not admiration; it is survival.
If the Hero makes peace with him after a scuffle, Grim commits to the friendship and promises backup, admitting that he owes the Hero one. He refuses to describe his own test, calling the details confidential.
Two loyalties
Grim later leads the Hero somewhere Diego cannot hear and reveals that Bloodwyn sends his regards, hinting that his errands extend beyond the Shadow hierarchy. In a lighter moment he is excited that In Extremo has arrived in the camp.
Grim's position is therefore unstable but understandable: he is trying to survive by collecting the right names while still looking for a place that is truly his.
