Jesse
Digger · Old Camp
"Well, you see, I'm clean out of nuggets, and Bloodwyn's really been breathing down my neck lately."
Advice for a newcomer
Jesse greets the Hero as a fellow newcomer and warns him about Colony life. If the warders demand a donation, refusing is not really an option; they can make life hell from then on.
Jesse presents the warning as a favour, then reminds the Hero that one hand washes the other and that a debt now exists between them.
Bloodwyn's ten nuggets
Jesse is out of nuggets and Bloodwyn has been breathing down his neck. He asks the Hero to cover the ten-nugget protection payment and simply say that Jesse sent him.
Once the debt is paid, Jesse calls the Hero his saviour; later he confirms that the two of them are square.
Bloodwyn's hired trouble
Jesse later warns the Hero that Bloodwyn has paid several people to make life difficult for him. He names Herek as one of the men Bloodwyn approached, although the warning arrives too late to prevent that encounter.
Jesse suspects Herek is not the only one and tells the Hero to look out for himself.
What other NPCs say
Bloodwyn dismisses Jesse while judging which diggers are likely to survive in the outer ring. The remark is brief but revealing: Jesse is not being evaluated by a neutral standard, and his weakness becomes another example of how quickly the warders abandon people who cannot protect themselves.
