The dam builder

Homer is a former engineer from Khorinis who led the construction of the New Camp's dam, although he is quick to say everyone helped. The structure is the camp's foundation in a literal sense, which is why he pays attention to the water and to anything that might weaken the wall.

The lurker at the base

Homer suspects a lurker has been gnawing at the dam. The beasts love to sharpen their teeth and claws on underwater rocks, and he worries that continued damage could make the dam cave in.

He sends the Hero to the far side of the lake, where people rarely go and where the lurker is likely to have made its lair.

Repairs and responsibility

Homer has asked the mercenaries and the bandits for help, but both groups tell him the dam is not their job. He cannot spare the nuggets to pay them, and insists that the dam's safety is in everyone's interest because the rice fields depend on it.

After the lurker is killed, he asks the Rice Lord to lend men for repairs and says he will sleep easier. Later he reports that the dam is strong as a fortress.

Learning to dive

Homer also teaches diving to anyone willing to make a donation. His first lesson is to relax and let the lungs do the work, which improves awareness as well as endurance.

Even here his advice is practical: the water can be beautiful, but only if the diver remains calm enough to survive it.

What other NPCs say

Lares brings up Homer after the Hero has helped with the dam's lurker problem, using the result as evidence that the Hero can be useful to the New Camp. Homer's situation shows how ordinary infrastructure work—keeping the dam safe—becomes part of the camp's larger struggle to survive.
