Lares

Rogue · New Camp

Hm. Well, thanks for the heads up. This is gonna be fun.

Lares is one of the New Camp's working leaders, receiving newcomers sent by Mordrag and measuring whether they can be useful to the rogues. He handles practical disputes at the camp's edge, including trouble around the rice fields, the convoy, Lefty, and Butch. His authority is grounded in work that must continue even when visitors bring Old Camp problems to his door.

The supply list

Diego's Old Mine supply-list business reaches the New Camp through Lares. He carries the thread forward after the Hero reaches the camp, turning an Old Camp errand into a problem involving the people who control transport and supplies outside the mine.

After the Old Mine

When the Old Mine floods, Lares asks after Ian and weighs the consequences with Torlof. The disaster turns his attention from recruitment and local discipline to survival: the camps' arrangements no longer look stable, and New Camp must decide what it can protect.

Lares's early judgement of the Hero has lasting consequences because he is the route between an outsider and the New Camp's leaders. Mordrag can bring someone to the gate, but Lares decides whether that person can be trusted with work inside the camp. His attention to small disputes is therefore part of the New Camp's larger security.

The issues he handles do not stay neatly within camp borders. Work around the rice fields and the convoy can bring Old Camp pressure directly to the New Camp, and the flood at the mine makes every old arrangement harder to trust. Lares responds to those changes as someone responsible for keeping daily life running.

What other NPCs say

Lares is mentioned whenever the Hero needs a raid organized, a letter delivered, a route explained, or a New Camp contact identified. People also use his quick acceptance of the Hero as proof that the newcomer is reliable, making Lares both a coordinator of action and a judge of character. Cronos uses Lares's quick acceptance of the Hero as a character test: if Lares took him in so fast, he must be reliable.
