A camp that demands proof

Mordrag is the first bridge into the New Camp. His ring tells Lares that the newcomer has been vouched for by someone the camp already knows, but it is not an admission by itself. Lares wants to see whether the hero can be useful to people who have no reason to trust an outsider from the Old Camp.

That proof comes through several different kinds of work. The Rice Lord's recommendation matters because Hakon's judgment carries weight among the camp's people. Lares also demands the ore earned from selling Baal Isidro's swampweed, turning a profitable deception into a contribution to the gang. The supply-list work begins in the separate Test of Faith chain: Lares takes Ian's original list, adds false entries, and asks the hero to return it to Diego while pretending nothing changed. The modified list tests whether the hero can carry out a delicate trick without exposing who altered it.

Trust, cunning, and a place in the gang

The final test is a raid on the convoy moving between the Old Camp and the mine. Wedge leads the raiding party, while Gorn supplies the better steel needed for the job. Lares expects the newcomer to keep out of sight until the moment is right and to avoid spoiling the operation through impatience.

Together, the tasks show what the New Camp values. Strength is useful, but it is only one part of belonging. The hero must contribute resources, keep confidence, read a situation, and stand with the camp when the Old Camp's authority is directly challenged. Admission is therefore less a ceremony than a record of favors repaid and risks shared.

The price of choosing a side

When Lares finally accepts the hero, the welcome carries the weight of everything that came before: Mordrag's endorsement, Hakon's word, the stolen advantage in the supply list, the swampweed proceeds, and the successful raid. The New Camp is not offering safety so much as a position within its resistance to the old order.

Choosing the camp also gives the hero a new identity in the colony's struggle. The gang's work is built around independence from the ore barons and the rules of the castle. To join is to accept that survival may require theft, deception, and open defiance—and to prove that the hero can be trusted with all three.
