The Rice Lord

The Rice Lord is Hakon, the man whose nickname has become more familiar than his own name. He oversees work around the New Camp's rice fields and speaks like someone who is always in the middle of the next problem, cutting short a casual introduction before the Hero can turn it into a longer conversation.

Work around the fields

When the Hero asks how to make himself useful, Hakon sends him to Silas at the lake tavern. He also recommends Lares to anyone considering the New Camp, promising to tell Lares that the Hero is a good man.

Hakon's authority is practical: he assigns work, knows who is responsible for it, and uses his long connection with Lares to help decide who can belong in the camp.

Bran and Rayk

Hakon's second job is to find Bran, his missing foreman. Bran is later found dead in Silas's cellar, and Hakon listens to the evidence before concluding that Bran was after Silas's stash.

He describes Rayk as a formerly good man who fell to drink, while explaining that he took charge of the fields because Rayk could not lead them. The Rice Lord is not sentimental about either man, but he is responsible for what their failures leave behind.

The Rice Lord enters conversations about repairing the dam, getting workers for the fields, and understanding why certain people in the New Camp receive special support. His authority comes from controlling labor and food production, giving him influence over everyday survival rather than battlefield command.
