The Circle of Water

Nefarius is a mage of the Circle of Water and one of the people who decides whether the Hero is ready to approach that circle. He explains that membership requires more than asking: the Hero must serve with Lee's mercenaries for a while and achieve something great for the Water Mages' cause.

Once the Hero joins Lee's men, Nefarius acknowledges the first step without promising the final one.

The Fire Mages' legacy

When the Hero returns from the Old Camp, Nefarius is anxious for news of the Fire Mages. Learning that Gomez murdered them horrifies him; he calls Gomez that rotten butcher and insists that the Hero report the news to Saturas immediately.

The massacre also changes his judgement of the Hero: the risks taken on the Water Mages' behalf now look like evidence that he could become a worthy addition to their ranks.

The temple in the tundra

Nefarius asks the Hero to investigate an ancient temple of Innos in the northern tundra. The Water Mages had an agreement with Corristo not to enter it, because Fire and Water were still bound by mutual commitments even when they disagreed.

With the Fire Mages gone, Nefarius believes their knowledge and relics must not be left to gather dust or fall into the wrong hands.

Knowledge over ownership

The temple lies beyond the mountain pass by the Old Mine, somewhere in the frozen waste and possibly behind a waterfall. Nefarius warns that the journey is dangerous because of wolves and allegedly restless orcs, but says the Hero may keep anything useful in combat.

What matters to him is knowledge: treatises, scrolls, tomes, and artifacts that can preserve the Fire Mages' legacy without pretending the Water Mages own it already.
