Lee commands the New Camp's mercenaries. He defines their work as protecting the ore and the Water Mages, with special assignments when the camp needs them. The Hero cannot simply ask for a place in his ranks: Lee sends him to prove himself through Lares's rogues first and makes clear that he hears about people who earn their standing.

The Free Mine

When the Free Mine is threatened, Lee's concern is practical rather than theatrical. He treats an attack as something that was always likely to happen, then focuses on protecting the camp's people and resources. His reaction places the mercenaries between the mine, the mages, and the outside camps that want New Camp ore.

A mercenary's standard

Lee repeatedly tells the Hero that he is still too green for the mercenaries. The refusal is not personal; it is the same standard he applies to every applicant. Reputation with Lares and the camp's day-to-day work are the proof he accepts before giving a newcomer greater responsibility.

Lee also makes clear that the mercenaries are not an escape from responsibility. Their freedom rests on protecting the mages' work and the ore that finances it, so every recruit must be able to carry more than a weapon. His scrutiny of the Hero reflects the pressure on a camp whose survival depends on disciplined people.

That is why he sends the Hero toward Lares before offering a place among the mercenaries. The rogues' work is a test of whether a newcomer can be relied on inside the camp, while Lee keeps his attention on the larger obligation to the mine and the mages.

Gorn introduces Lee as a former general who assembled the Colony's strongest fighters into a mercenary crew. Other references arise when the Hero asks about recruitment or the New Camp's plans, showing that Lee's authority comes from both his military past and his control over who joins the crew. Gorn explains Lee's status by pointing to his past: he is a former general who assembled the Colony's best fighters into a mercenary crew.
