Lee's last question
Lee has watched the hero prove useful to the New Camp more than once, but usefulness alone does not settle the matter of rank. His final test combines danger with judgment: protect Myxir while the mage follows a magical signal along the beach. The hero has to serve as a shield for someone whose attention is fixed on forces no ordinary fighter can see.
Myxir senses the vibrations as something changeable, sometimes no more than a whisper and sometimes strong enough to pull him toward the wreck. He also notices that the hero's presence may affect what he is feeling. The search is therefore not a simple treasure hunt; it is an attempt to understand a disturbance that seems tied to the colony's wider magical instability.
The book beneath the wreck
The signal leads underwater, where Myxir cannot follow. The hero dives into the wreck and recovers a heavy old book protected by a spell that resists being opened. When the book is returned, the magical vibrations settle back into balance, and Myxir's gratitude confirms that the mission mattered beyond the camp's immediate interests.
The work also exposes the kind of danger the mercenaries are willing to accept. Lee's people are not scholars, but they protect the person who can interpret the threat and trust a fighter to reach the place the scholar cannot. Their strength comes from combining roles rather than pretending that one kind of skill is enough.
A place chosen, not inherited
Lee's final question is why the hero chose the New Camp instead of the Old Camp or the Brotherhood. The promotion is therefore personal as well as practical. The hero is not simply being assigned a uniform; they are being asked to explain which values they are prepared to stand behind.
Joining the mercenaries places the hero inside the camp's resistance to the powers that control the colony. The recovered book may be Myxir's discovery, but the decision to protect him—and to accept the risks of the search—becomes the hero's own statement of allegiance.
