"A letter from the outside? Then you did us a great service."

Torrez is the man Corristo's messengers see for their reward. When the Hero delivers a letter from outside, Torrez calls it a great service and offers a choice of rewards: a mana potion, a set of one-use scrolls, a Ring of Dexterity, or a Ring of Strength, commenting approvingly on whichever the Hero picks, at one point noting speed often beats strength.

The letter

He can also be persuaded to hand over a reward before the letter itself, though he first tries to send the Hero to Milten. If the Hero insists on payment first, Torrez relents and gives a ring, calling it more than what he'd usually give a messenger and telling him to show some gratitude.

If he then discovers the letter's seal has been broken, he punishes the Hero for it, downgrading the reward to a single potion and warning that nosy messengers normally get nothing.

The messenger's reward

Torrez receives the letter carried from outside the Barrier on Corristo's behalf. He calls its arrival a service to the Fire Mages and offers the Hero a choice among a mana potion, one-use scrolls, or rings suited to strength or dexterity. The reward is recognition that a messenger has crossed a boundary the mages cannot simply ignore.

He can be pressed to pay before seeing the letter, but does so reluctantly and sends the Hero to Milten first. If he then learns that its seal was broken, he treats the breach as a serious failure of trust, cuts the reward down to a single potion, and warns that curious messengers normally receive nothing.

What other NPCs say

Corristo, Diego, and Milten direct the Hero to Torrez for rewards or when he needs to find a castle official outside the inner rooms. His habit of leaving the castle makes him unusually accessible, so Torrez becomes a practical point of contact between the ore barons' household and the outer ring.
