Outcome
Torrez unlocks the basic rune-crafting lesson after the hand-in.
Magic begins with scarce materials
Torrez's lesson starts with a blank parchment and two wolf claws, not with a grand spell or a secret incantation. Graham explains why the paper costs something: every blank sheet he sells is one map he cannot make, and paper is scarce inside the Barrier. The hero is buying access to magic with materials that the whole camp already needs.
Fisk may help point the hero toward the paper, making the errand part of the Old Camp's web of favors. The ingredients are ordinary enough to gather, but their scarcity reminds the hero that even knowledge has a price in a prison where nothing can be replaced easily.
A choice between two forms of power
Torrez explains that scrolls can be used by most people, while runes are tied to the Circles of Magic. A rune's inscription acts as a focus, holding and channeling the spell through the small spark of power inside its user. The hero can choose a healing rune or one that scorches an enemy, deciding whether the first lesson serves endurance or attack.
The choice does not make the hero invincible. Each cast consumes magical strength, and the rune must be used with practice and restraint. Torrez is teaching a craft, not handing over a miracle that removes all danger.
A crack in the old monopoly
By opening basic rune-crafting to an outsider, Torrez gives the hero a measure of independence from the people who normally control magical instruction. The lesson also makes the camp's hierarchy visible: higher Circles still guard deeper knowledge, while raw materials and discipline determine how far a novice can go.
