A message that cannot travel openly

The Hero receives the letter at the moment when even an ordinary message is dangerous. The Fire Mages live inside the castle, where only Gomez's men are allowed to enter, and people in the Outer Ring would gladly take advantage of a newcomer carrying something valuable. The letter is therefore not just a delivery; it is a reason to keep quiet and find the one route through the camp's hierarchy that will not end with the messenger being robbed.

Milten is the first safe handover. He reads enough to recognize that the letter belongs with Corristo, but does not invite the Hero into its contents. His discretion reinforces the boundary around the Fire Mages: the message matters, yet the person carrying it is not entitled to know why. The Hero's role is to cross the distance between the camp's outer ring and its secluded circle of mages without disturbing the chain of trust.

The castle and its gatekeepers

Torrez is the practical link between the castle and the rest of the Old Camp. He can be found outside more easily than the other Fire Mages, which makes him the person the Hero can approach when the reward becomes part of the negotiation. Corristo may authorize payment, but Torrez is the one who turns that promise into something the messenger can actually receive.

That arrangement reveals how access works in the Old Camp. The castle is physically close, but socially sealed: the Hero needs the right contact, the right seal, and the patience to let the mages decide how much information to share. A sealed letter gives him a temporary place inside that system, never full membership in it.

Trust is part of the payment

The reward changes according to how the Hero treats the letter. With the seal intact, Torrez offers an unusually valuable ring. If the Hero opens it, Torrez assumes that curiosity has overridden the messenger's duty and reduces the payment to a potion. The difference is more than a lost reward. It shows that the Fire Mages judge the delivery by the Hero's restraint as well as by whether the letter physically arrives.

The job is an early lesson in the Colony's information economy. A messenger can be useful without being trusted, and a small breach can turn a generous arrangement into a grudging one. By carrying the letter safely to its intended recipient, the Hero proves that he can move through the Old Camp's guarded spaces without treating every secret as his own to uncover.
