A book needed for a dangerous ritual

Y'Berion is looking for a Fire Mage almanac on focus-stone magic, knowledge he needs for the Brotherhood's preparations. The book is not safely stored in the castle. Milten lost it on the road to the Swamp Camp when black goblins attacked him, and he has not told Corristo because he was never meant to have the volume outside the Fire Mages' control.

The request places the hero between two camps that normally guard their knowledge from one another. Y'Berion needs the research, while Milten wants it recovered without drawing the attention of his superiors. Returning the book is therefore an act of cooperation carried out under the cover of an ordinary recovery.

A guide who will not enter the cave

Talas leads the hero along the eastern road and identifies the cave near the waterfall, but he waits outside when the fighting begins. The arrangement is revealing: the Brotherhood needs the book badly enough to ask for help, yet the hero remains the person expected to face the creatures guarding it.

Once the almanac is recovered, it travels first to Y'Berion and then back toward Milten. The hand-off keeps the research moving while preserving the relationship between the Fire Mages and the Brotherhood. The hero becomes the trusted carrier of knowledge that neither side is willing to exchange openly.

The first thread of the focus-stone mystery

The almanac gives the Brotherhood access to ideas developed by the Fire Mages and pushes the hero deeper into the ritual's preparations. It also foreshadows the importance of the focus stones: what begins as a lost book will lead to questions about old magic, the factions' shared history, and the force they are preparing to unleash.
