Corristo's decision

When you tell Corristo that the Water Mages need the Fire Mages to help control the Barrier ritual, he hesitates because Gomez would see the cooperation as disloyal. He ultimately agrees to go to the New Camp and help with the spell.

Corristo does not send you over the battlements. He tells you to speak to Milten, who knows another way out of the castle.

Getting Milten out

Milten explains that the safer route is a tunnel. He leads you away from the castle after Corristo gives the order, and the dialogue specifically warns that Gomez blames the player for the mine disaster and may react badly to seeing Milten cooperate with the Water Mages.

The linked follow-up has you report to Saturas. Saturas confirms that Gomez murdered the Fire Mages and that Milten was the only one who survived, leaving the ritual without Corristo's group to control it.

Fire and water forced into the same plan

The request begins as a negotiation between two orders that have spent years protecting their own knowledge. The Water Mages need the Fire Mages' control of magic, while Corristo knows that cooperation with the New Camp could look like betrayal to Gomez. His hesitation is not a lack of concern for the Barrier; it is an awareness that the castle punishes anyone who appears to act outside its chain of command.

Milten becomes the hinge of the escape. He can guide the hero through a tunnel, but he also understands that leaving the castle may make him a target. The route carries the Fire Mages' help out of the place where it was controlled and toward a ritual that belongs to all the camps.

The tragedy behind the hand-off

When the hero reaches Saturas, the situation has changed from a difficult negotiation to a catastrophe. Gomez has murdered the Fire Mages, and Milten is the only one left to carry their knowledge forward. Without Corristo's group, the ritual no longer has the people who were meant to control it.

The quest therefore marks a decisive failure of the old political order. Cooperation was possible inside the castle, but the ore barons chose to treat it as treason. The surviving alliance now has to continue without the circle that was supposed to make the plan safe.
