Recovering the Free Mine

Route

  • Before the assault, speak to Wolf. He offers a separate minecrawler-armor project if you bring him the tougher crawler plates.
  • Go with Gorn to the Free Mine. He gives you the gatehouse key, and he will wait if you wander away from the route.
  • Clear the mine with Gorn until the attackers are gone. He remains at the gate afterward while the Free Mine is back in New Camp hands.

Outcome

The mine is reclaimed; Wolf's armor job remains a useful follow-up.

The mine that decides the balance

The Free Mine is valuable for more than the ore inside it. Whoever controls the mine controls the supply that keeps a camp armed, fed, and politically relevant. Gorn leads the assault because the New Camp cannot allow the Old Camp to hold the source of its future indefinitely, while the hero is trusted with the gatehouse key and the dangerous work beyond it.

Before leaving, Wolf offers a different way to turn the mine's dangers to use. He has noticed that one breed of minecrawler carries plates tougher than the ordinary kind and imagines making armor from them. Even in the middle of a military operation, the colony's survivors are looking for ways to transform the creatures beneath their feet into protection.

Reclaiming more than a tunnel

The fight through the mine is long enough to test the alliance between Gorn and the hero. When the attackers are finally gone, Gorn does not mistake the victory for security. The Free Mine is back in New Camp hands, but the camp's future still depends on whether ore can continue to move and whether Gomez accepts the loss.

Gorn expects another attack because the Old Camp's power rests on the mine's supply. He stays at the gate to hold the position, turning the reclaimed entrance into a defensive line. The hero's work therefore changes the political balance of the colony, even though the next threat is already visible beyond the cleared tunnels.
