A view beyond the camp

Theron's offer begins as a simple exchange: six rolls of Northern Dark for a lesson in climbing. Yet the smoke is not merely a price. For men living beneath the colony's blue dome, it is one of the small comforts that makes the enclosure bearable, and Theron is willing to barter some of that comfort for a skill that gives the hero access to the cliffs.

When the rolls are delivered, Theron leads the way himself. The climb is a quiet departure from the camp's crowded paths, taking the hero toward a lookout that Theron has claimed as his own. From above, the barrier and the surrounding land can be seen together—a reminder that the prisoners are surrounded even when the view feels open.

A private lesson under the dome

Theron admits that the view lets him forget he may spend the rest of his life beneath the dome. He has learned to live with that possibility, but the unease has not disappeared. His request to keep the lookout secret is half practical and half personal: he does not want a secluded place to become another public square.

The lesson therefore teaches more than how to reach a high ledge. It gives the hero a new way of moving through the colony and a glimpse of how its inhabitants cope with confinement. Theron's guarded lookout becomes a small act of trust, shared on the condition that it remain his refuge.
