A cook's invitation to camp life

Snaf's recipe begins with a practical promise: ordinary meatbugs and unusual hellcaps can become a meal worth sharing. He knows the insects look unappetizing, but he also knows that the colony cannot afford to judge food by appearance. Around the castle wall, rubbish and empty huts provide the meatbugs; beyond the south gate, the hill past the broken tower provides the mushrooms.

The ingredients draw the hero through the edges of the settlement, turning a request from the kitchen into a small tour of the camp's forgotten spaces. Snaf's cooking is part of the same survival economy as hunting and scavenging: nothing useful can be ignored simply because it is ugly or inconvenient to gather.

A warm meal in a hard place

When the ingredients arrive, Snaf makes the ragout quickly and admits that it tastes better than it looks. The recipe is modest, but the result is a shared comfort in a place where most food is treated as fuel. Extra portions are limited until the next day, which makes the meal feel like a camp resource rather than an endless reward.

The quest also gives Snaf a reason to trust the newcomer. In the colony, cooking is not separate from community: a good pot can lift morale, attract people to a hut, and make a prisoner feel briefly less disposable. The ragout is the hero's first taste of a small, ordinary life that the camps are always struggling to preserve.
