Route

  • Show the old recipe to Snaf. It is Old Brock's warder stew, and Snaf wants double supplies so he can teach you while keeping his own portion.
  • Bring at least two each of scavenger meat, onions, carrots, potatoes, and solanaceae. Solanaceae grows in and around caves.
  • Sear the meat without scorching it; brown the vegetables; crush the solanaceae fresh; then add water and simmer until the meat is tender.

A recipe with a warder's name on it

Snaf recognizes the old recipe as Old Brock's warder stew, tying a humble meal to one of the Old Camp's power structures. Brock once cooked for the warders without paying their protection money, an unusual position in a camp where food, safety, and status are normally controlled from above. The recipe has survived even though the circumstances that made it famous have faded.

Snaf wants double the ingredients so he can keep one portion while teaching the hero. Scavenger meat, onions, carrots, potatoes, and the rarer solanaceae become the basis of a lesson in making something hearty from what the Colony can provide.

Cooking as inherited knowledge

The method matters as much as the list. The meat must be seared without burning, the vegetables browned, and the solanaceae crushed fresh so its aroma opens into the stew. Water replaces the wine Brock may once have used, showing how recipes change when they pass from a warder's kitchen to an outer-ring cook.

When Snaf tastes the hero's version, he accepts that the knowledge can be shared. He unlocks the dish for future cooking, turning a forgotten scrap of camp history into a new source of food and a small connection between the people who work, fight, and eat beneath the castle.
