I got a new recipe, meatbug ragout a la Snaf. With rice and mushrooms.

Snaf cooks for the Old Camp and has no interest in pretending that a meal needs fine ingredients. He explains that meatbugs can be found wherever rubbish collects, including the empty huts by the castle wall, and that hellcap mushrooms grow on the hill beyond the broken tower outside the south gate. What matters to him is whether the ingredients will feed people, not whether they look appetising before they reach the pot.

Meatbug ragout

His current recipe is meatbug ragout with rice and mushrooms. He asks the Hero for three meatbugs and five hellcaps, then makes the stew once everything arrives. Snaf is generous once the pot is ready, offering additional bowls without charge, but he also warns that a day's supply can run out and that hungry visitors may have to return the next day.

The request has a small history behind it. Snaf previously sent Nek, a warder, after the same ingredients; Nek never returned. Snaf says Nek never looked happy in the Old Camp and assumes he may have turned coat for the New Camp. The missing errand turns an ordinary cook's request into one of the early signs that people can leave the Old Camp when they see a better chance elsewhere.

Keeping the camp fed

Snaf's work sits beneath the camp's larger politics. Guards, warders, and newcomers all come through his kitchen, while he remains focused on supplies, recipes, and the next meal. His plain advice about where to forage gives the Hero a practical route through the area outside the castle rather than an abstract errand.

Snaf's concern for Nek is casual in tone, but it anchors the ingredient errand in the camp's uneasy loyalties. A warder disappearing into the New Camp is not a monster story; it is another person deciding that the Old Camp offers too little reason to stay.

What other NPCs say

Guy recommends Snaf when the Hero is trying to learn who last spoke with Nek. The context is the investigation into Nek's disappearance, and Snaf's value comes from being one of the last known contacts rather than from holding a formal position or having authority over the camp.
