A recruiter turned dealer

Baal Kagan serves the Sleeper in the New Camp and introduces himself as a member of the Brotherhood. Master Y'Berion originally sent him to recruit new souls, but Kagan says most men in the Colony would rather kiss an orc than open their eyes to the Sleeper's truth.

He therefore spends most of his time selling swampweed, where the demand is easier to prove than a stranger's faith.

The lost helper

Kagan's reinforcement, Isidro, does little but loaf around the lake tavern and sell his swampweed for rice schnapps. Kagan calls him a drunkard. Good for nothing and asks the Hero to hand out single rolls as appetizers for potential customers.

The terms are strict: lose the herbs or smoke them personally, and the deal is over.

When the Hero succeeds, Kagan hears that new clients have already approached him. He offers payment in nuggets, Sleeper-imbued scrolls, or help getting accepted into the Brotherhood, turning a small marketing task into a possible route toward belonging.

Winning over the gurus

Kagan explains that the Hero must convince the higher baals before Cor Kalom will accept him. Baal Tyon is particularly difficult: after Y'Berion consulted him several times, Tyon became arrogant and now refuses to speak with anyone except his own students.

Kagan offers a smoke roll to make him more talkative. If the Hero prefers scrolls, he can choose three from Windfist, Charm, Telekinesis, Pyrokinesis, and Slumber.

What other NPCs say

Baal Isidro mentions Kagan while laughing off a disagreement and telling him to go away. Because the exchange comes from someone discussing swampweed and Brotherhood business, it suggests that Kagan is involved in the camp's internal dealings but does not command Isidro's respect.

Baal Kagan’s swampweed rules

  • One roll per person: When Kagan gives the Hero swampweed to distribute, each potential customer gets one roll. Smoking the batch yourself or losing it cancels the deal.
  • The Brotherhood-member distinction: Kagan will not trust a non-member with a full batch. Outsiders can still help by handing out small samples, while a Brotherhood member can take on the larger distribution job.
  • Getting Baal Tyon to listen: Baal Tyon normally speaks only with his own students. Kagan’s smoke roll is the workaround that makes Tyon willing to hear the Hero’s request for a recommendation.
