Route

  • Cohsel can set you up with a rideable scavenger, but first needs five kingstide algae from lake bottoms. The algae is used for a whistle that attracts and calms the beast.
  • Next bring three wolf pelts and two leather strips for the saddle, then return the following day. The whistle calls the scavenger only when it can reach you.
  • Keep it out of caves and away from crowds: a tamed scavenger bolts when threatened.

Outcome

Cohsel gives you the whistle and a tamed scavenger after the saddle is finished.

A partnership built from bait

Cohsel's promise of a rideable scavenger sounds like a feat of taming, but his method begins with understanding what the beasts already want. Kingstide algae grows beneath the lakes, and scavengers are drawn to it. Five handfuls give Cohsel enough material to make a whistle that attracts a scavenger while keeping it calm.

The arrangement is a partnership rather than a conquest. The animal is not persuaded by a command or broken by force; it follows a familiar lure and the promise of a safe handler. The hero's work is to gather the material that makes that fragile relationship possible.

The saddle and the limits of freedom

The whistle is only half the undertaking. Cohsel needs wolf pelts and leather strips to build a saddle, then asks the hero to wait while he finishes it. When the saddle is ready, the whistle can call the scavenger—but only if the animal can physically reach its master.

Cohsel's warnings matter as much as the reward. A tamed scavenger is less bold than a wild one and runs when it feels threatened. Caves are too confining, and crowds make it nervous. The result is a new way to cross the colony's open ground, but not a creature that has stopped being wild. The hero gains mobility by respecting the animal's boundaries.
