From scales to razor plates

The third volume advances Cavalorn's lessons from soft organs to natural armor. Razor plates are connected to a larger plate beneath them, and their edge is sharp enough to cut the hunter who handles them carelessly. Cavalorn remembers breaking a blade on one long ago, so his instructions come from a mistake he does not want the hero to repeat.

The correct approach is almost delicate: find the natural seam where the hard plate meets the darker hide, then cut along it with as little pressure as possible. The motion is closer to peeling bark than hacking through armor. Even after the plate loosens, anchoring fibers and unexpected cartilage can hold it in place.

Proof in three clean pieces

Cavalorn asks for three large scutes from the lizard's back as proof that the lesson has become instinct. The number is less important than the condition of the pieces. A broken plate shows force without control; an intact one shows that the hunter understood the animal's structure.

The bestiary series is quietly changing the hero's relationship with the wilderness.
