Cavalorn
Colony wilderness · Beyond the camps
Knowledge is probably your best weapon.
The hunter beyond the camps
Cavalorn lives as a hunter beyond the camps, where he hunts scavengers and sells bows. He treats hunting as learned craft rather than bravado: a new archer is told to keep the bow arm loose, relax the shoulders, and practise; a more experienced one is taught to root their stance and control their breathing before loosing an arrow.
The bestiary lessons
The Hero can bring Cavalorn volumes of a bestiary, and Cavalorn turns them into practical lessons. He explains how to take bloodfly poison sacs, lurker gills, fire-lizard glands, razor plates, and swampshark hides without ruining the valuable part. Each technique is tied to a particular anatomy and a careful cut, not a general promise that every carcass can be stripped the same way.
The books also lead him to ask for rare specimens. He recognises the value of a minecrawler queen's glands, is astonished by silver fur from a frost shadowbeast, and rewards successful work. His excitement is tempered by experience: he recalls losing two companions to swampsharks before he learned what to watch for.
Cavalorn does not simply buy trophies. He asks the Hero to demonstrate that each bestiary lesson has been understood, then pays for cleanly taken parts. The result is a continuing partnership in which knowledge about the Colony's creatures becomes a practical advantage rather than a collector's pastime.
That practical outlook explains his interest in a minecrawler queen's gland and his amazement at the frost shadowbeast's silver fur. He respects a difficult hunt, but measures its value by what the hunter has learned and brought back alive.
What other NPCs say
Mordrag identifies Cavalorn as an Old Camp hunter who chose a quiet life away from the main camp. Graham points travelers toward his hut, while Milten and Thorus use Cavalorn's knowledge when discussing the ruins and the canyon, showing why an isolated hunter remains a valuable source.
Unlocking Cavalorn’s bestiary lessons
- Read the book and pass the questions: Cavalorn does not teach the next bestiary lesson just because the book is in your inventory. Read the relevant volume and answer his questions correctly first.
- Bring the right specimens: The razor lesson is proven by bringing three large scutes from lizards. The later swampshark lesson requires both a swampshark hide and its plates.
