Initiation into the Circle of Water
Quest · Chapter 3 · New Camp
Route
- Saturas requires practical magical knowledge before he will test you: learn alchemy from Riordian and inscriptions from Merdarion.
- When both are covered, complete the Trial of Adanos by following the river to the altar and making the required offering.
- Return with Adanos's blessing for the oath. Having already sworn to Innos does not block the Water Mage initiation.

Knowledge before belonging
Saturas does not treat the hero's earlier service to the New Camp as enough for entry into the Circle of Water. Before he will administer the test, the hero must learn two disciplines that the order considers essential: Riordian's alchemy and Merdarion's inscriptions. Potions preserve a mage's strength, while inscriptions turn knowledge into spells that can be carried and used when armed conflict is unavoidable.
The requirement gives initiation a practical foundation. The Circle is not looking only for devotion or talent; it expects a prospective member to understand the tools through which its magic survives in the colony.
The Trial of Adanos
Once the lessons are complete, the hero follows the river to an altar and makes the required offering. The trial moves away from camp politics and into a direct appeal to Adanos, whose blessing Saturas can feel when the hero returns. The order's authority is therefore confirmed by both human instruction and a sign that lies beyond it.
Saturas then asks the hero to take the sacred oath. He makes clear that an existing oath to Innos does not have to be broken; fire and water can exist within the same person. Rather than demanding that the hero erase an earlier identity, the Circle treats the new bond as an extension of it.
Fire and water in one prisoner
Receiving the blue robes places the hero in a rare position. The new initiate can move between traditions that normally stand apart, carrying the knowledge of the Water Mages while still bearing the mark of another faith. That combination matters to the story because the colony's survival will require cooperation across old boundaries, not a single faction acting alone.
The oath is thus both a spiritual commitment and a political one. The hero joins an order devoted to maintaining balance, and becomes a living connection between powers that have every reason to distrust one another.
